Asbestos Program Brochure

Asbestos Awareness:

A proven carcinogen is present in most schools & office buildings on the Navajo Nation. Although most uses of asbestos were banned in the 1970's, most schools & office buildings were built between 1935 & 1970.

In 1986, U.S. Congress approved the Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA). The Act requires schools to take certain steps to make sure students & school workers are not exposed to harmful asbestos fibers. These steps are aimed at managing & controlling materials which contain asbestos.

Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency (NNEPA) Asbestos Program provides asbestos safety information for buildings & homes. Some floor tiles containing asbestos are covered by carpeting in office buildings.

Floor Observation:

The safety of your health and others' should be a major concern in homes and office buildings. Floor tiles contain materials with asbestos content. Wear & tear of floor tiles start with a missing tile.

Floor tile starts chipping away & many will not be aware of the wear & tear.

Signs of repair:

Tiles seem to keep getting loose after the first one to indicate asbestos material.

Inquiries or requests for additional information regarding presentation & public outreach efforts can be directed to Asbestos Program, under the Air & Toxic Department of NNEPA, P.O. Box 339, Window Rock, AZ. 86515, telephone (928)871-7703.
