Quarterly Air Monitoring

Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency (NNEPA)/Air Quality Control-Particulate Matter (PM10)

The Navajo Nation has five Particulate Matter Air monitoring stations throughout the Navajo Nation. Arizona stations: Fort Defiance, Nazlini, Tuba City; New Mexico stations: Shiprock and Crownpoint.

The monitors measures how clean or polluted ambient air is. The Air Quality Control Program uses the USEPA National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) to interpret the monitoring results. The NAAQS standard for PM10 over a 24 hour period is 150 ug/m3 and annual PM10 is 50 ug/m3 (micrograms per cubic meters).

Samples collected for the past three quarters are as follow respectively, Fort Defiance: 21.4 ug/m3, 21.5 ug/m3, 29.9 ug/m3; Shiprock: 13.0 ug/m3, 13.0 ug/m3, 19.0 ug/m3; Crownpint: 12.3 ug/m3, 11.8 ug/m3, 18.7 ug/m3; Nazlini: 2.4 ug/m3, 9.5 ug/m3, and 20.0 ug/m3.

As shown above for the past three quarters, the level of PM10 poses no health risk to the communities since the monitoring results do not exceed the NAAQS..

The PM10 sampling network is operated and maintained and calibrated by Air Quality Control Program (NAQCP). The NAQCP staff provides analysis, reporting, quality assurance oversight and quarterly audits of the monitors.

The NAQCP is in the process of upgrading its monitoring capacity to monitor additional air pollutants.

Inquiries or requests for additional information regarding PM10 should be directed to NNEPA (NNAQCP), P.O. Box 529, Fort Defiance, AZ. 86504, telephone (928)729-4246. Air Quality Control Program email at nnepanilchi@navajo.org.
